Laura Hope Hobson, PA-C

ADHD Habit Coach
Psychiatric Physician Assistant

Hi, I’m Laura,

and I help adults with ADHD overcome impulsive habits—like procrastination, hair pulling, skin picking, stress eating, and more—so they can drop the shame and reclaim their time, energy, and confidence.

I’m especially passionate about supporting the BFRB* community, so I host a monthly BFRB support group, created a BFRB Salon and Spa Directory and have BFRB-focused meditations on Insight Timer.

*BFRB stands for body-focused repetitive behaviors, which includes hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, and other related behaviors

My philosophy

I take a different approach to “bad” habits because I don’t actually see them as bad—they’re simply a natural result of dysregulation.

We don’t repeat any behavior that doesn’t serve us in some way, so the key to habit freedom lies in getting to the root of it by exploring how the behavior is providing benefit. Only then can we start to find other regulation strategies or approaches to meet those needs.

In my shame-free framework for lasting behavior change, I treat urges as a message that we’ve become dysregulated, and the behavior as an effort to restore regulation.

I also see self-compassion as a necessary part of the process because self-criticism (especially related to the behavior) only drives the dysregulation that fuels the unwanted habit.

Speaking Topics

• Shame-free strategies to manage ADHD

• Nervous system regulation for impulsive habits

• Body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, etc.

• Using parts work to reduce shame

• The importance of awareness, regulation, and compassion in habit change

• The role of acceptance and compassion in self-regulation

• The gift of getting uncomfortable

My Journey

For 20 years, I lived with a secret that shaped my entire life - trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling). I hid behind medical explanations for my bald spots, even from those closest to me, while shame and isolation became my constant companions. This struggle sparked a powerful shift: I became a physician assistant in psychiatry, determined to understand my own behavior and help others with similar challenges.

As a person with ADHD, I’ve also spent my life trying to understand how my brain works differently. After years of trying to get my brain to work like the majority’s, I finally dropped the struggle and started exploring how I could get my environment to support my brain—and it’s been a much smoother ride since!

Now, as an ADHD Habit Coach, I support those who are most impacted by impulsive or frustrating habits. I've turned everything I've learned in my training as a mental health clinician and personal journey into a program to guide others through compassionate behavior change. My 12-week program, Hack Your Habit, takes my unique signature “ARC approach” built on increasing awareness, regulation, and compassion to help ADHD brains break free from ANY unwanted behavior - without willpower or shame!
