What's the universal element for BFRB recovery?
This week, for BFRB Awareness Week, I'm sharing some of the most powerful insights from The Great BFRB Get-Together last weekend. Yesterday, I shared that recovery may not look like what you imagine.
Well, then, what does it look like?
While the specific strategies look different from person to person, there was one thing that seemed universally helpful for BFRB recovery.
Recurring theme #2:
Community is transformative
Everyone in BFRB recovery agrees: being part of a community makes a world of difference. Invariably, people with BFRBs remember the first time they met someone else with a BFRB.
Because those who live with BFRBs "get it" in a way that no one else can.
Sometimes this happens at conference, and other times out in the "wild" of day to day life, but there's something profound about this first encounter.
We heard multiple people describe an incredible connection that quickly develops. Strong bonds are formed within minutes. Both people feel truly seen in their struggles.
Those who have strong support systems, whether it's a BFRB family or otherwise, start to shed the shame and heal from their BFRB.
Because more than anything else, we need to know that we are accepted by others... and community is the way to prove that to yourself.
